Swiss citizens are voting today (Sunday 4 May) on whether to maintain or abolish the annual license fee that finances public broadcasters. Opinion polls suggest that 60 percent would vote to keep the fee, but if the measure to do away with it IS adopted, Switzerland will become the first European nation to abolish fees for public broadcasting. Last year, the fee raised 1.37 billion Swiss francs, most going to Swiss national broadcaster SRG, which operates in the four national languages and gets 75 percent of its budget from the fee.
