I've used the M80 for both vocals and acoustic guitar and it is by far one of my favorite mics. One of the vocalists said after using it that that was the first time she'd ever gone home from a gig and didn't feel a little hoarse. I could tell from the mix position that the vocalists felt a lot more comfortable in front of them. The quality of the mic gave them that extra bit of confidence to sing exceptionally. For the acoustic guitar I tested a number of mics including the Audix OM6 and the Shure SM57 and this one beat both of those. It had great presence and a nice round bass response without being over-bearing at all.
As a sound engineer who obsesses in legendary microphones for recording with a collection including an original AKG C12, Neumann U67, Neumann U47, ELA-M 251, etc., it's hard for me to get excited with stage mics. Setting aside mic pre amps, mixer, effect processors, speakers, etc., which matters in the chain to get that big warm silky sound, this mic absolutely delivers! The chrome simply inspires - but the mic, no matter what color, is deserving of my taking the time to review. Hear it for yourself. I'm blown away, actually! This is probably the best kept secret among singers nowadays. This is my new favorite mic.
I will start by mentioning the one and only con it has: if you're in a full band at tiny venues, you absolutely need a sound guy who knows what he's doing. If you're playing a gig at a small place like I do regularly(less than a 40-people capacity), you may have sound issues unless you place your monitors NOT directly facing to the mic but to the sides, then you will be thrilled. This baby has A LOT of gain compared to my previous favorite, Shure SM57. The difference is overwhelming. I used to love that mic, now I do not want to go back. So if you're at a regular honkytonk, club, outdoors (I used my M80 at a festival with 6,000 people and it was awesome), go for it.
An excellent microphone capsule for Shure wireless transmitters. The quality and clarity of this microphone is noticably better than the Beta 58 and Beta 87 in a side-by-side comparison. Both Shure models sounded rather thin and a bit harsh in the higher frequencies whereas the M81 was full and clean sounding with no EQs applied. I used it with my low baritone vocal range, which sounded great to my ears, and then had my my wife used it to sing with her beautiful soprano voice and it instantly clear that this was the mic I wanted her to use. I'm very impress with this Telefunken M81 capsule can now want to add more Telefunken mics to the locker.
