Testing the handling and agility of the CAAD12 Saeco afterwork, uphill, on the gravel, in the bush. Nah not really, just trying to survive to get to the top, once you start there is no exit point or turn around or stopping, either stay seated or commit to standing but you have to just keep grinding. Old School Rd, Clear Mountain.
The hardest most difficult 1.1km stretch I ride, Max heart rate, loose gravel, spinning rear wheel, avg 7.7% & a max 22% at the hairpin, but to me still beats going up the backside to the mountain top. Who remembers the original “electronic” grouppo’s from Mavic back in the day? 1992 Mavic Zap and later in 1999 Mavic Mektronic. A lot of development went into these some 16yrs before Di2 was released. I understand Chris Boardman rode Zap for 8 years.
One day I’ll get my hands on either Groupset for my collection Repost from. In 1992 Mavic developed an electronically controlled derailleur that was first tested by the ONCE and RMO teams in the Tour de France. The following year we launched the ZMS (Zap Mavic System), the first micro-processor driven rear derailleur. Two strategically-placed buttons on the handlebar to change gear (up or down) with a feather-light touch the microprocessor in the handlebar sent the information to the electromagnets in the derailleur, all in real time.
Today electronic shifting is something of a normality, it always brings a smile to our faces knowing that our engineers worked on this concept over 25 years ago!. Hey I see your reproduction Mercatone Uno Pantani bike & raise you a 2018 Mario Cipollini Cannondale CAAD12 Saeco.

Throwback Wednesday - This I think is one of the only pictures I have of me racing as a junior for the BCRI Broncos racing team in June 1999 as a 16yr old. Its said I'm know for not getting over stuff, & this day is probably the day that eats me alive the most.
QLD state road championships at Mount Morgan, Rockhampton. Back then to race at Aust.National championships the top performers were selected from each state. I had done well in the Individual TT and crit, a top 5 in the road race and I had enough to go to the big race down south. This was on the Burnett Hwy going thru Mount Morgan, a small group of 4th,5th,6th & 7th & I had made it up the Leydens Hill climb without loosing to much. Up the road we were chasing Aaron Kemps (Astana, FlyV) Jonathan Cantwell (Saxobank, Drapac) & Wade Cosgrove (Track Junior World Champion) they ended up staying away & got 1,2,3.
2km before the downhill sprint finish back into Mt Morgan, my front tyre punctured - my race was over. I was horrified & filthy. The spares car had already gone thru to the finish, not that it would of helped. I was offered a lift to the finish line but refused as no matter what I wanted to be classified as finished even if it was dead last. I walked that 2km in my Carnac shoes and ground off the Exus cleats by time I arrived & definitely had tears & was gutted & still wish I could of made that QLD team to go to the nationals. The place getters went on to acheive some cool things racing in the biggest events in the world, & also in that race was Anna & Kerrie Meares & Allan Davis (ONCE, Astana etc). I often think back to being young and riding, not a care in the world, no powermetres, STRAVA, GPS computers, carbon this & that, 11/23t cassettes just riding as hard as you can.
I enjoy watching and riding with juniors nowadays seeing them have fun as I think of how it made me love anything to do with bicycles & the freedom it gives when going for a ride. I always kept my 1st racing jersey & hangs proudly in my shop to remind me of those fun times.
Thanks again SO MUCH for coming out on my favorite ride yesterday We are lucky to have great ride options close by to mix it up over the same old weekly loops. Conditions were HOT and TOUGH.
What started as a yearly ride with mates 5yrs ago went from 8,15,25,120 riders & a few more this year by the looks of it. I don’t really have official weekly shop rides as I’m pretty busy at the shop, but it’s cool to make my 1 ride Brisbane’s biggest shoppy 😉 for one of the smallest shops.

Now that most of my Team Saeco bikes have gone to new homes across the globe, I have two remaining that hopefully someone will enjoy as much as I have.
I have been collecting, riding and hording Cannondale Saeco’s for the best part of 2 decades. Cannondale manufactured handmade frames in the US until the early/mid 2000s, therefore riders received custom made frames and geometry and stamped with a serial number using the riders name, Full Hi-Res images and details are on my shop website - www.leservicecourse.com.au/saeco This Bike - Marius Sabaliauskus 2001 CAAD 6 60cm race bike.
The Lithuanian, Sabaliauskus rode with Team Saeco for 4 years (then 2 when it became Lampre) beginning in 2001 & was a popular GC rider along with Gilberto Simoni and played a major role in his 2003 Giro win. Marius competed in 2001 races like Paris-Nice, Liege-Bastogne-Liege & Amstel Gold Race. Again this is stamped and all original along with custom geometry for a big rider. (615mm TT & slightly higher head tube) A standard 60cm for example uses 590mm TTs. I ride this bike occasionally and absolutely love it, awesome to ride.
