Comcast had scheduled a tech to install Alex’s service, but the tech didn’t show until several days after his appointment, when he was told his services were not needed.

This greatly angered Comcast: “because Alex’s roommate called Comcast himself to set it up (in effect doing exactly what the tech would have done, had he bothered to show up), no one was being billed for our internet! So, instead of notifying anyone, they flipped the switch and turned it off.” Comcast explained to Alex that his modem’s MAC address was blocked, and would remain blocked until they spoke to the data warehouse, which was closed. When Alex finally got through to the warehouse, he was told that his MAC address could not be unblocked, and that he would need a new modem; but even with a new modem, Alex still could not get on the internet. He could, however, have another maddening conversation with Comcast. I told them that because they apparently blocked the old MAC address, we are now using this modem.

He says that they need to send us a new modem; I said no, you said yesterday we can use a different one, and this is a Motorola Surfboard (gnarly!) just like the old one. He says hold on, then came back and took the MAC address. Hold more, then takes the customer serial number from the modem.

This time he forgets to put me on hold, and I can hear him talking with someone and laughing. I’m really hoping he calls me a name or something, but other than whatever lolocaust he’s having, it seems ok.

Finally, he comes back and says the exact same thing they said two days ago: they need to add our MAC address to their database, which the guy can’t do from where he is. Alex is still without internet service. It may be time to summon the indefatigable solution mavens of to speed the internet’s safe return. WTF, Comcast (Photo: ).

Hi there, I am going to assist someone replacing a XFinity gateway with a Motorola SB6121 modem. (The XFinity is not allowing PPTP VPN connections out and from what I can see on the forums, this is a known issue with people either demanding the Arris gateway or rolling their own modem/router.) My question is: Is there a special number I should call to get the modem provisioned?

Or do I just call 888-Comcast and hope they won't refuse to do it? (edit: I suppose I should say that I am being cynical with my last statement. Maybe this is no big deal. I just haven't done it in years.) Edited to add topic group category. I helped a friend replace his SB5100 with a new Zoom 5341J recently. The only issue we had was the first modem we tried, Comcast could not add it to the account because their system said that modem was already active on someone else's account.

We had just come from Best Buy where we purchased the modem, it was in the box, shrink-wrapped, we thought it was new. Comcast refused to accept it, we had no choice but to drive all the way back to Best Buy, exchange the modem (and hope we really did get a new one), and then go through the provisioning again. Said by: I did not get walled garden. I had to call in. I saw in the logs that a configuration with the name 'walledgarden' was downloaded to the modem, but I did not see the walled garden when I attempted to get to the Internet. Would've loved to use the WG, but.

Thank you to everyone.The walled garden does not always work. If you are behind a router that assigns DNS entries other than Comcast's DHCP assigned DNS servers to its DHCP clients (D-Link for example, uses a special set of OpenDNS servers by default on some of their routers), or if your PC uses manually entered DNS entries, the walled garden may not work. For your future reference (should you need to do this again) connecting a single PC that uses only DHCP (no manual IP entries at all) will help to insure that you access the walled garden when a new modem is installed. Yeah, this was basically my experience. I noticed that I got a private IP with no gateway address for a while.

Then, after quite a few minutes, I got another private IP in the same range but with the gateway applied. Lastly, after even more minutes, I got a public IP (or so I think. 50.x.x.x I believe.) At each step of the way, I tried: 1. Going to any website to attempt a grace redirect to the walled garden.

Going to activation.comcast.net and activate.comcast.net. I was able to access the modem's pages and I did see a log entry about a walledgarden configuration having been downloaded successfully. Said by: Called and ordered new service (tv already there) using user supplied sb6120. Gave them serial and mac. Said no problem.

Tonight plugged in modem, 4 lights lit up after a couple of minutes, but when i connected notebook to modem (no router), no internet access. Computer assigned an ip address but subnet mask is 255.255.254.0 which seems weird. Can i do anything other than call comcast?The CMTS may be trying to download a new version of firmware and/or a bootfile. See » to interpret the LED indicator lights on the modem.

Don't worry about the 255.255.254.0 subnet mask; the subnet mask for my connection is 255.255.248.0. The subnet mask is just an indicator of the number of possible IP addresses that are assigned to that subnet. If you want help, you will need to supply some more information, such as which lights on the modem are on, what color, and which (if any) are blinking.

The modem status, signals and logs pages would also be helpful (you can mask your CM MAC). The results of 'ipconfig /all' or 'ifconfig' commands (depending on the OS) on the attached PC would also be helpful (you can mask the PC's MAC and the IP address). Thank you both. I did expect a firmware update (the modem is a couple of years old) and I left the modem running overnight. Same problem this morning, can apparently connect to the modem but no further. Sorry for the lack of details last night, I was going to type more but my phone's Swype keyboard was acting up. Here's more useful (I hope) detail.

Scheduled Internet activation date was Jan 1 and TV was already in place and working. I connected the modem Jan 3, so there should be no concern about 'try later in the day'. Plugged in the modem and the first 4 lights lit up, I think they lit up in order: Power (cable modem is powered on), Receive (downstream channel is connected), Send (upstream channel is connected), Online (Startup process complete), all solid (green, blue, blue, green). When I plug in the network cable, the fifth (Activity) light blinks (transmitting or receiving data) but not otherwise. I assumed there'd be activity to download the firmware or whatever, of course but it's possible not.

The only time there's any activity in the lights is either when the ethernet cable is connected to my notebook, or I think from time to time (hours apart?) lights 2-4 go out and then back on again. Ipconfig and ipconfig /all reports below. If there's anything in here I should mask or edit, please let me know. I removed Wireless and Tunnel adapter info, as well as IPv6, just to keep it short. I tried to browse to 50.128.184.1 (the modem) and it just timed out. Is there anything I can do at this end, or do I have to contact Comcast? And can I post on DSLR or do I have to call?

Thanks again! The IP address 50.128.184.1 does not belong to your modem, it it the gateway address for the CMTS. Use 192.16.100.1 to see your modem stats. The other IP address information you posted indicates that you do have a connection to Comcast except for the DNS server addresses. The IP addresses 208.122.23.22 and 208.122.23.23 are registered to voxel.net; they are not the DNS servers that are normally supplied by Comcast DHCP, and that may be why you can't get to the Internet. I just tried to use them on the PC I am using for this post, and Internet access is dead.
